The Bunker’s Grading System

At The Bunker, we believe in providing challenges for climbers of all ages and skill levels. Our carefully designed grading system ensures that everyone, from tiny tots to seasoned climbers, can find routes that match their abilities and push their limits.

Our Grades

Ladybirds

• Designed for our youngest climbers
• Simple, fun routes with large, easy-to-grip holds
• Perfect for building confidence and basic motor skills

Rainbow use a mix of colors to suit

• Suitable for climbers of all ages and abilities
• Colourful routes that focus on enjoyment and basic technique
• Great for families and beginners trying bouldering for the first time

V0 – V5

Our V0 to V5 grades offer a progressive challenge for intermediate climbers. Each grade introduces new difficulties and techniques, allowing climbers to track their improvement over time.

V0 Purple

• The first step into technical bouldering
• Introduces basic techniques like edging and crimping
• Typically features larger holds and straightforward movements
• Ideal for beginners transitioning from VB routes

V1 Purple

• Slightly more challenging than V0
• May include mild overhangs or traverse sections
• Introduces more complex hand and foot sequences
• Focuses on improving balance and body positioning

V2 Blue

• Requires more strength and technique
• Often includes smaller holds and more precise footwork
• May feature longer reaches or dynamic movements
• Encourages development of route-reading skills

V3 Yellow and Lime Green

• Considered the threshold for intermediate climbing
• Introduces more complex problem-solving
• May include challenging slopers or pinches
• Requires good core strength and body tension

V4 Yellow and Lime Green

• Demands significant strength and technique
• Often features sustained climbs with few resting points
• May include advanced techniques like heel hooks or toe hooks
• Requires efficient movement and good endurance

V5 Yellow and Lime Green

• Represents advanced intermediate bouldering
• Combines complex sequences with demanding physical requirements
• May include very small holds, difficult slopers, or powerful dynamic moves
• Requires well-rounded climbing skills and problem-solving abilities

V6+ Red, Dark Green, Black, Orange

• Advanced routes for experienced climbers
• Technically demanding and physically challenging
• Perfect for those looking to push their limits

Tips for New Climbers
